Open Curtains

There was a ray, one I hadn’t seen before

Its brightness was far greater than that of any star

Even the sun honored it

I could not perceive its source with the naked eye

It clothed me in such peace

Its beauty could only be defined, by its presence

Though I’d never crossed paths with such glory

It seemed to know my very spirit

So mighty, yet gentle

Silent, but its energy screamed

Love

How gracious you are

To desire to enter a wretched soul, such as mine

Curtains Fall

Liquor store runs, pass out
problems awaken me.
Green grams
struggles flying next to me.
No matter where I run, there’s no escaping shadows.
Not even in the Light, for it is what creates them.
Where do you go when God can’t even make the SonRise?
When life seems like an endless night?
Joy as bright as the stars,
yet still surrounded by darkness.
Are the lenses out of focus,
did I forget to turn on the flash?
Can you picture the moment,
where peace will forever last?
Or will it always be placed in frames,
residing in the past?
When the curtains fall,
only then, will I see.

People tell me things, deep, painful, secret things. It’s part of the work of chaplains, why we exist. We are the conduit of their unburdening. This is a beautiful function of the human connection. Can you imagine it: healing a little just by sharing? How marvelous! We do it all the time, every day. When we tell our boyfriend how our day was, or complain to our best friend about our boss, we are healing through sharing through connection. We need each other to witness our lives and we witness for others. But because this is such a powerful need, we are sometimes afraid to share and afraid to witness the deep, hard, suffering parts. We don’t want to risk the connection. These are the burdens we keep and carry…

Beautiful Daughter

One day

I ran into some old friends

They told me I’ve let myself go

They’re just unaware of the expansion of my soul

See all I’ve eaten is fruit

Left the gym

Entered the spiritual realm

Been lifting burdens ever since

No cents, to lend the poor

I’m jobless too, but I can give them more

Than a dollar can afford

A third eye, gland

Removing pain from the blood

Streams, flowing into Eden

So many apples we’ve been eating

Chasing shots of sin, with holy water

What a beautiful daughter, Grace is

One night

I was training on the wrong track

When I ran into some old friends

They told me I’ve let my self go

I smiled, looked to the sky

And replied, “I know.”
